Get Ready for Summer Travel

With warmer weather just around the corner, it’s only natural to want to take off, soak up some sun, and just relax. Your bags are packed, the room is booked, and you have all your favorite car snacks packed and ready to go. But Wait!! What about your vehicle maintenance. That’s right, every summer trip should start with a little preventive car care.summer travel Tips

Before I head out on a long car trip the first thing I think about is an oil change.  It is the most basic service you can have performed on your vehicle. The last thing you want to have to deal with is an overheated engine or engine damage during your vacation. Oil changes are fast, affordable, and easy. Make sure you perform this basic maintenance before you leave.

Another basic maintenance item is new wiper blades. Most of us might forget about them, but when you hit a heavy downpour you’ll be glad that your blades are in top shape.

Nothing is worse than a vacation ruined by a flat tire. Before you leave, make sure you check your tires for uneven wear. You will also want to look for tire damage, tread wear, and bends in the rims. If you notice any of these things, you might want to consider new tires, tire repair, or having a professional tire technician take a closer look.

Brakes are also an important item on your vehicle to check before road trips. Most of us go many, many miles before any brake maintenance is needed. The bad thing about brake longevity is how hard it is to tell when service is needed. Have your brakes recently? Excessive use and warmer temperatures could make a set of brakes on the precipice of failure, actually fail!

Lastly, make sure you have the equipment you need. This isn’t really auto maintenance, it’s just common sense. Always have a flashlight, radio, and jumper cables on hand. If you are traveling to a colder climate you might want to consider a winter emergency kit as well.

United Tire & Service wants to wish you a happy travel season this summer. If we can assist you with any of your preventative auto maintenance don’t hesitate to give us a call, stop into one of our many locations, or schedule your appointment online today.
